Hanover is an unincorporated community in the Baltimore/Annapolis area in northwestern Anne Arundel County and eastern Howard County in the U.S. state of Maryland, located south of Baltimore.

Unlike many shopping malls that have spokes that radiate out from central concourses — sometimes on more than one level, Arundel Mills is all on a ground floor layout and if you keep walking in any direction, you always end up coming back to where you started which is important if you don't have any sense. The AAA Four Diamond rated Live! Casino & Hotel is one of the largest commercial casinos in the country, located in the Washington DC/Baltimore corridor, just off I-95, Route 100 and the B/W Parkway at Arundel Mills. It is part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Combined Statistical Area and is located just southwest of the Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (commonly known as 'BWI'). It is bordered by Severn to the south, Linthicum to the east, and Elkridge to the north and west.

History[edit]

In the past, the community also consisted of 'Anderson', a post office stop founded along the B&O tracks from 1874–1881 along modern Anderson Avenue, and operated as 'Hanoverville' until December 1896.[3]

Hanover is located along the fall line where the ocean met the shore in prehistoric times. Native American tribes lived along the lower Patapsco river. archeological digs in 1929 have discovered arrowheads, spearpoints, axes, and gorgets along the Disney farm. The area is now occupied by commercial buildings along Hi Tech drive and Oxford Square development.[4]

Arundel Mills mall opened in November 2000. Since then, the area has seen explosive growth; shopping centers and housing developments have popped up along Arundel Mills Boulevard (Route 713), which links the B-W Parkway and Route 100 to Arundel Mills. In August 2010, Preston Partners sought to rezone a failed commercial project on the historic Disney farm into a transit-oriented development funded by Magic Johnson.[5] On November 2, 2010, Anne Arundel County voters approved zoning for a gaming and entertainment complex with 4,750 slot machines at Arundel Mills Mall. This casino complex opened as Maryland Live! in June 2012. The Maryland Department of Transportation is headquartered at 7201 Corporate Center Drive, which has a Hanover address.[6]Amazon has operated a distribution warehouse in Hanover since 2018.[7]

Demographics[edit]

HANOVER, Md. (WJZ) — What had been the latest roadblock to slots at Arundel Mills may turn out to be the last. A settlement has kicked it out of court.

Alex DeMetrick reports that’s kicked off a rush for jobs.

From the workers who will move the first ground and those who install the first slot machines, the parking lot at Arundel Mills Mall and the slots casino coming there is an economic promised land.

“It’s about creating jobs,” said Louis, a slots supporter.

“Construction jobs down to the suppliers, down to the vendors–there’s so many people who depend upon a job like this,” said Greg Yablonski, United Rental.

Those who want a part of that work showed up for a briefing by the Cordish Company, which outlined the jobs to be bid on and the paperwork to get started.

“It’s an opportunity for businesses to get involved at the beginning of the project. It will do a lot for the growth and development of small businesses within the state of Maryland,” said Richard Hart, T&E Global Equipment.

“I think there’s a huge opportunity,” said Sarah Ellison, PEI Staffing. “Not only is it wonderful for all the candidates that we have in this area, who have been unemployed and are really strong workers, but it’s great to see it’s going to improve our economy as well.”

And it’s starting soon. A representative said the casino is looking to open sometime next year–despite a delaying action by opponents who fought it at the county level, then at the state Court of Appeals, and finally at the ballot box, where the casino and developer David Cordish won.

But no sooner had the first ceremonial ground been broken, opponents secured a new injunction to stop construction.

But the latest court challenge to this project was dropped when the developer agreed to more stop lights and road improvements. So as of now, it’s a green light for the casino and those hoping to be part of it.

“This is something that I really think is going to help the state in general, bringing in the money that can help get people back on their feet,” Yablonski said.
