BEHIND THE HEADLINES

Niklas “lena900” Astedt: Can barely believe it himself

Two in two nights for Lena900: Viewers of the PokerStars Twitch live coverage of WCOOP were treated to an absolute clinic on Sunday night as some of the online game’s most celebrated talents made the final table of WCOOP-44-H: $2,100 NLHE. The two players left at the very end are among the absolute elite: the all-conquering Niklas “Lena900” Astedt, from Sweden, and Russia’s Artem “veeea” Vezhenkov, a two-time WCOOP champion but also the only player ever to win the Sunday Million three times. This was irresistible force versus immovable object, with each boasting hundreds of outright wins and reputations for being impossible to beat heads up. There was no talk of a deal, of course, and when it came down to it, Vezhenkov found himself on the wrong side of a bad beat when a double up could have drawn chip stacks close to even. Astedt had a three-to-one lead when they got all their chips in with Vezhenkov’s A♣K♣ a strong favourite against Astedt’s A♦4♦. But not only did Astedt flop a four, he also hit two diamonds with a third coming on the turn. That was that and Astedt won his second title in as many nights. He also prevailed in the $5,200 NLHE PKO High Roller on Saturday, for which he won more than $200K. This latest title was worth $80,642.40 as Astedt matches Adrian “Amadi-017” Mateos’s back-to-back WCOOP victories from earlier this series. (Astedt has the chance to make it three in three as he currently sits second of 18 left in the $2,100 buy-in Sunday Warm-Up.)

And another double champion: Brazil’s Rafael “pycadasgalax” Furlanetto became the latest double champion of this year’s WCOOP when he beat a 1,930-entry field in WCOOP-44-M, the $215 NLHE event. This latest victory over an enormous field was worth $58,026 and comes a little more than a week since Furlanetto beat the medium buy-in fixed-limit hold’em field of 416, for $7,539.46. It’s rare these days for no limit specialists to dabble in fixed limit too, and Furlanetto therefore has a rare double. But our roll of double champions for WCOOP 2020 is now eight strong: Adrian “Amadi_017” Mateos, Niklas “Lena900” Astedt, Yuri “theNERDguy” Martins, Noah “Exclusive” Boeken, Andras “probirs” Nemeth, Tobias “Senkel92” Leknes, “The_Truht” and now “pycadasgalax”.

Persistence pays off for “Care_Teddy”: Here’s a lovely little story of persistence and belief. On Friday, which was WCOOP’s rest day, “Care_Teddy” of the Netherlands played and won a side event, picking up $2,273.12 for victory in the $11 Showtime Hold’em 6-Max. He took to Twitter in celebration of his victory, but also wondered aloud: “So uhh.. I locked up a @PokerStars #WCOOP title.. kinda? Sort of? Does it count?”. It didn’t count, of course, so he tried again, in the “official” $22 NL Hold’em event 44-L, and was well placed going into Day 2. It was worth another tweet. “Officially an unofficial #WCOOP champ since yesterday. Looking to change that tomorrow.”

Here we are on Monday morning and “Care_Teddy”‘s journey is complete. He rose to the very top of that $11 buy-in field yesterday, sealed the deal, banked the win worth $29,811.98 and is now proudly able to declare himself “WCOOP CHAMPION”.

🏆 WCOOP CHAMPION 🏆 pic.twitter.com/XKhWvSHIBI

— Kevin / Care_Teddy (@Care_Teddy92) September 14, 2020

“Care_Teddy” beat a field of 1,520 entries to his side event win, but there were nearly ten times as many (a field of 11,412 entries to be precise) in the “official” tournament. That’s one exceptional weekend. He describes himself on Twitter as a 28-year-old Dutchman named Kevin, an ex e-sports athlete and recreational poker player, with a Micro Millions title to his name. We’ll hope to learn some more later today.

Clean sweep in the Cooldowns for Brazil: The Brazilian production line of poker players shows no signs of slowing down as three more WCOOP champions rolled off it in the Sunday Cooldown events. Brazilian players won the low, medium and high buy-in events of WCOOP 51, the 8-Max PKO Turbo, with “RafadeMello”, “Tcheleee”, and Ricardo “RRagazzo” Ragazzo all claiming the first titles of their careers. Brazilians took four of nine titles handed out on Sunday and now trail only the UK in the overall title count for this WCOOP.

Big names in contention again: This WCOOP has been characterised by the most familiar talents in the game proving just why they’re held in such high esteem — and the trend seems certain to continue into the third week. Chip leaders overnight include Tobias “Senkel92” Leknes, who already has two wins this year and five overall, Ludovic “ludovi333” Geilich, who has also won already, and Bert “girafganger” Stevens, who was a double champion coming into this WCOOP. The last 14 in the $2,100 NLO8 event is especially brilliant, featuring “FONBET_RULIT” at the top, ahead of Rinat “Zapahzamazki” Lyapin, Shaun “shaundeeb” Deeb, Murilo “Muka82” Figueiredo, Talal “raidalot” Shakerchi, and Mike “goleafsgoeh” Leah, among others.

TWITCH WATCH

Spraggy continues to have a lot of fun in the low buy-in events and sits second in the leader board there. It’s thanks to these kinds of plays that he’s prospering. You couldn’t get away with this in a $5K.

British gamer “Onscreen” is playing a lot of WCOOP this year…and he’s having a lot of fun too. Hands like this help:

TOP TWEETS

Details are pretty scarce from @MattyPasqua, but he’s got one thing definitely right: WCOOP is the very best place for lower-stakes players to do battle against the beasts of the online game. And you never know, you might beat them…

Earlier I played in a poker tourney with one of the best poker players in wcoop. Took him out & honestly its an honor that my high pockets beat his J-10 suited. Went from being the worst poker player on the rez in 2005 too schooling up the worlds finest in 2020. Boo yeah 🎉💯

— Matty P (@MattyPasqua) September 14, 2020

Meanwhile, following on from the “Care_Teddy” story above, fellow tweeter Morten Ottosen summarises the whole situation quite succinctly:

Where are all the “side events arent wcoop champions” now 😀 perfect answer to that one! GZgz

LEADER BOARDS

With all these known superstars running riot through WCOOP, you might expect one of them to occupy the No 1 spot in the Player of the Series leader board. But you’d think wrong. In fact, Latvia’s “aleksandrs10” is now leading that particular race, just edging ahead of Yuri “theNERDguy” Martins. aleksandrs10 has won a WCOOP title this year, and finished runner up in another, but it’s his consistency across all buy-in levels that keeps him atop this leader board — and it’s something he’s done before, as regular WCOOP and SCOOP watchers will know.

About 10 days ago, PokerStars kicked off its 2020 World Championship of Online Poker, better known as WCOOP. Action started on Sunday, August 30 with four events, and approximately one-third of the schedule is already complete.

The series – PokerStars’ signature online poker series and the one that laid the groundwork for all other sites to follow since WCOOP began 19 years ago – offers a total of 75 events, but most have three levels of buy-ins attached.

Did we mention that PokerStars is guaranteeing more than $81 million across all of its prize pools?

It’s kind of a big deal.

First Days of WCOOP

The very first day of WCOOP on August 30 delivered a win to a well-known PokerStars name. Ambassador Ben “Spraggy” Spragg finished ninth at the final table of Event 5-H for $5,222.98 and then final tabled Event 5-L. And he kept going, eventually livestreaming his victory. He won $4,349.41 for outlasting 12,191 competitors.

All in all, Spraggy captured a WCOOP title and more than $9,500 for the day.

AND NEW WCOOP 2020 CHAMPION!

I JUST WON A FUCKING WCOOP TITLE!

12,192 RUNNERS AND I WIN THE WHOLE DAMN SHOW!

Day 2 brought a number of players back for the final day of Event 2-H, the $10K NLHE 8-Max PKO Sunday Slam. Dimitar “KuuL” Danchev not only took his chip lead from the previous day to the winner’s circle, he collected $400,494.59 for the victory. In addition, he collected nearly $250K in bounties.

Poker pro Ankush “pistons87” Mandavia grabbed a third career WCOOP title on Day 3 when he won Event 12-H, a $530 NLHE Heads-Up Turbo PKO Zoom event. Out of 526 players, Mandavia was the last one standing for the $40,792.90 first-place prize.

More Big Names Win in Week 1

By the fourth day of the series, players found their groove. Ludovic “ludovi333” Geilich won his second career WCOOP in the $10K NLHE High Roller, which was Event 10-H, a two-day event on the schedule. His online poker account grew by $238,966.30 for that win.

Also on Day 4, Chris “ImDaNuts” Oliver won Event 10-M for $149,968.28 and his own second career WCOOP victory. And longtime Dutch pro Noah “Exclusive” Boeken took down his third WCOOP by winning Event 11-H, the FLHE 6-Max event worth $20,312.17.

Day 5 was another for big poker names. Andras “probirs” Nemeth won Event 15-H, a $530 NLHE 8-Max event with rebuys. Out of the 294 entries, Nemeth stuck around to claim $79,655.48 for the win and his first WCOOP title.

Day 6 was a day of rest for most players, courtesy of PokerStars’ scheduling gurus.

This past weekend played numerous events. Two of the most well-known winners were Sylvain “calculer_” Loosli and Gavin “gavz101” Cochrane. Loosli took down Event 27-H for $78,182.44, and Cochrane won Event 26-H (5-Card PLO 6-Max) for $63,236.85.

Double Champs

In an extensive series like WCOOP, there can be players who capture more than one title in that single series. Two players already did it.

Yuri “theNERDguy” Martins of Brazil emerged victorious in Event 20-H, a $1,050 HORSE tournament. He won $31,115 in cash. That paired well with his win days earlier in Event 9-H. That $1,050 NL 2-7 Single Draw win brought in $21,937.50.

This past weekend saw Adrian “Amadi_017” Mateos win Event 28-H – an 8-Max Turbo OKO Freezeout, also known as the Sunday Cooldown Special Edition – for $80,211.93 and his third career WCOOP title. But he wasn’t done. The very next day, Mateos took on the $25K buy-in Super High Roller Sunday Slam. He ended up heads-up with Fedor “CrownUpGuy” Holz, and Mateos won it for $543,685.63 and his fourth career title.

Another brilliant night in #WCOOP:
